The Pirbright Institute

The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks and has recently received substantial infrastructure investment to support this role. We study viruses of livestock and humans that are endemic and exotic to the UK using advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors.

Organisation position and purpose:

The purpose of the role is to create a collaborative research group in an area of strategic relevance to the Institute. We wish to recruit either an early career stage fellow or experienced group leader. We have a specific interest in:-

  • Arbovirology with an emphasis on virus-vector interactions
  • Cell biology of virus-host interactions
  • Avian or bovine immunology

Other subject areas will be considered on a case by case basis but applicants will be required to research their relevance both to the Institute’s aims and existing research areas.

Main duties and responsibility

Running a Research Group:

  • Produce excellent science including recruitment of high quality staff funded by competitive grant applications and management of their roles.
  • Provide leadership, management and a collaborative focus.
  • Develop and validate cutting-edge techniques for exploration of virus: host interactions.
  • Work with science support services to ensure appropriate levels of biosecurity, health and safety and quality assurance are maintained.

Specific Requirements

Essential – Fellow

  • An innovative research proposal contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Evidence of independent vision in carrying out scientific research
  • A strong record of productivity with at least two lead author publications in reputable journals.
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of commitment to developing management skills.
  • A strong collaborative focus in research.
  • A record of taking on responsibilities at an organization level (e.g. committees, organizing seminars, hosting seminar speakers)

Essential – Group Leader

As above, but also including:

  • A record of productivity including at least five lead or senior author publications in reputable journals.
  • A high quality research reputation, based on invited lectures, honorary positions and awards etc.
  • Evidence of writing competitive grant applications and an awareness of routes of funding.
  • Evidence of commitment to developing management skills with a proven record of successfully recruiting, developing and leading people.

Desirable – For Both

  • Experience in high containment working practices
  • Additional veterinary experience
  • Experience of collaborations with partners in countries receiving overseas development aid
